Yoshino Cherry Tree
Prunus x yedoensis
Blossoms start off as a light pink which turn to white as time passes. Most popular of the ornamental cherry trees and come from Japan. You see these trees in many of the images of Japan and are also a huge hit in Washington, DC at the Tidal Basin, as well.

This is the Yoshino Cherry Tree, whose presence graces my front yard and was my mother's most favorite tree. You will see many shots coming up for the next few weeks of this tree and another that my mother loved, which was the Kawanza Cherry Tree. Only the Yoshino is flowering at the moment, though.

Just a few weeks before she passed away in 2002, she sat on the window seat of her bay window and watched it blossom for the last time. Tears came to her eyes as she spoke to me about it being the last time she would get to see this lovely tree burst into bloom. When the blossoms fall from this tree, they are so light that they are carried upon the wind in the most wonderful manner. Like raining blossoms which circle all about the house and can be seen via any window at any time.

Each year, I wait for the the cherry trees to bloom and when they do, I smile and I drink the sight in, as she did, with a hunger that can not seem to be quinched. The trees are so large and lovely this year. I so wish she were here to seem them. I like to think that she can see them.

Hummingbirds came for the first time last year, or rather, I first saw them drinking from the blossoms last year. Already, I have seen them this year. Tiny ones, so graceful, hovering in place, high above me and buzzing all about the blossoms, in competition with the bumble bees which adore this tree as much as I do.
